How it scores

Each heart costs 1 point and the queen of spades costs 13. Every hand hands out exactly 26 points between the players.
You must follow suit if you can. Hearts may not be led until a heart has been discarded on another suit.
Shooting the moon: take all thirteen hearts and the queen, and every other player scores 26 instead of you — or subtract 26 from your own total if your table plays it that way.
The game ends when somebody reaches 100. The lowest total wins, so it is the only sheet here where you want the small numbers.

What is on the Hearts score sheet?

How many points are in a hand of Hearts?

The arithmetic of Hearts is unusually tidy: thirteen hearts at one point each, plus the queen of spades at thirteen, is exactly twenty-six. Every hand distributes those twenty-six between the players and not one more. If the four scores you have just written do not add to twenty-six, somebody has miscounted — which is the quickest error check any card game gives you.

What is shooting the moon, and how does it score?

The exception that makes the game. Take all twenty-six and the score inverts: everyone else takes twenty-six and you take nothing. It is the reason you cannot simply dump your high cards and coast — a player collecting hearts on purpose looks exactly like a player having a terrible hand until the moment it is too late to stop them.

Two conventions exist for writing it down. Most tables give twenty-six to the other three; some let the shooter take minus twenty-six instead. The sheet accepts negative numbers, so either works — just agree before the first deal, not after somebody shoots.

Which cards do you pass in Hearts?

Before each hand you pass three cards: left, right, across, and then a hand with no passing at all, repeating in that order. Beginners pass their high hearts. Better players pass the ace and king of spades — the queen is the card that decides most hands, and holding her guards without the high spades is how you end up eating her.

Hearts scoring: questions people ask

How does scoring work in Hearts? Every heart is worth one penalty point and the queen of spades is worth thirteen, so each hand hands out exactly twenty-six points between the players. You write down what you were forced to take. The lowest total wins, which makes this the one score sheet where a big number is bad news.

When does the game end? When any player reaches 100. Everyone finishes the hand, and then the player with the fewest points wins. Some tables play to 50 for a short game — the sheet does not mind, it just keeps adding.

What is shooting the moon? Taking all thirteen hearts and the queen of spades in one hand. Instead of collecting twenty-six, you give twenty-six to everyone else. Some tables let the shooter subtract twenty-six from their own total instead; enter that as −26 and the sheet handles it.

Does it save my game? Yes, in your own browser. Close the tab, reload, come back after dinner — the scores are still there. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.

Can I print a blank pad instead? Yes. Switch Print to “Blank pad” and you get a clean sheet with the rules along the bottom, in A4 or US Letter. Print a stack and keep them with the cards.
