What is on the Golf score sheet?

A Golf card game score sheet with nine holes listed down the side, four player columns filled in and the running totals underneath

Nine lines, one per hole, up to six players across. Type each hole as it ends and the running total keeps itself — the lowest is marked in amber, because in this game that is the one you want.

How do you score the Golf card game?

Golf card game scoring. Kings score nothing, aces 1, cards two to ten their face value, jacks and queens 10, and jokers minus 2 where a table uses them. Beside it a three by three grid of cards with the middle column showing three sevens, marked as scoring zero.

At the end of a hole everybody turns their grid face up and adds it. Kings are free, aces cost one, the number cards cost their face and the jacks and queens cost ten each.

The exception is what makes it a game: three matching cards in a column score nothing. Two queens in a column are twenty points of dead weight until the third arrives, at which point they are worth nothing at all — and that gamble is most of what you are deciding on every turn.

How many holes do you play?

Nine, one per deal. A table that wants a longer evening plays eighteen by going round again, and the sheet simply keeps adding.

The nine-card version arranges three rows of three. Six-card Golf uses two rows of three and four-card Golf a square of four — the scoring and the nine holes do not change, so this sheet fits all three.

Which rules should you settle before the first deal?

Whether rows count as well as columns. Whether a diagonal counts. Whether four of a kind in a block scores a negative. And whether jokers are in at all, and at minus two or minus five.

None of these are wrong, but a table that has not agreed on them will argue at hole seven. The blank sheet prints the common set underneath so there is something to point at.

How to print a blank Golf score sheet

Choose Blank sheets and print one, two or three pages, on A4 or US Letter. Every sheet carries the nine holes, six player columns and the card values underneath.

Golf scoring: questions people ask

How many holes are in the Golf card game? Nine, one per deal, which is where the name comes from. Some tables play eighteen by going round twice — the sheet totals whatever you fill in either way.

What is each card worth? Kings nothing at all, aces 1, twos to tens their face value, jacks and queens 10. Jokers, at tables that use them, are minus 2. The king scoring zero is the whole point of the game.

What happens when three cards match in a column? That column scores nothing. It is the fastest way to a low hole and the reason you hold on to a pair you would otherwise throw.

Do rows and diagonals count too? That depends entirely on your table. Some count rows, some count diagonals, some give a block of four a negative score. Agree it before the first deal rather than while somebody is laying one.

Does this work for 6 card and 4 card Golf? Yes. The grid is smaller but the scoring and the nine holes are the same, so the sheet fits all three without changing anything.

Does the highest or lowest total win? The lowest, exactly as on a golf course. The sheet marks the smallest total in amber as you go.
