What is on the Hand and Foot score sheet?

A Hand and Foot score sheet with the four rounds labelled by their minimum meld — 50, 90, 120 and 150 — two team columns and the running totals underneath

Four lines, and each one carries its minimum: 1 · 50, 2 · 90, 3 · 120, 4 · 150. That is the number the table asks about most, and on a plain numbered grid it is the one thing missing.

Two columns for partnership play, up to six for singles. Type each round’s total and the running score keeps itself, with the leader marked in amber.

How do you score Hand and Foot?

Hand and Foot scoring. The four rounds demand a first meld of 50, 90, 120 and 150 points. A clean pile scores 500, a dirty pile 300, a wild pile 1,500, each red three 100 and going out 100. Cards are jokers 50, twos and aces 20, eights to kings 10, fours to sevens and black threes 5.

A round’s score is everything your side melded, plus the pile bonuses and the red threes, minus whatever is still in your hand or your foot when somebody goes out.

Piles. Seven of a rank. Clean — no wild cards — is 500; dirty is 300; a pile of nothing but wild cards is 1,500.

Red threes. 100 each laid out, minus 100 each still in hand. They are the quickest way to lose a round you thought you had won.

What is the minimum meld in each round?

Fifty in the first round, ninety in the second, a hundred and twenty in the third and a hundred and fifty in the fourth. Until your side can put that much down in one turn, nothing goes on the table at all — which is why the later rounds start slowly and then move very fast.

Tables vary here more than anywhere else in the game. If yours plays 50/90/120/150, the sheet already says so; if not, the numbers on the left are only labels and the boxes take whatever you type.

How is Hand and Foot different from Canasta?

It is Canasta with two hands each. You are dealt a hand to play and a foot you may not touch until the hand is gone — which is the whole tension of the game, because going out means getting through both.

The scoring is a close relative: piles instead of canastas, the same red threes, the same idea of melding to a minimum. If your table plays the older game, the Canasta sheet is here too.

How to print a blank Hand and Foot score sheet

Choose Blank sheets and print one, two or three pages, on A4 or US Letter. Every sheet carries the four rounds with their minimums, six columns and the pile values underneath — so whoever keeps score does not have to be the one who knows the game.

Hand and Foot scoring: questions people ask

How many rounds is a game of Hand and Foot? Four. What changes between them is the first meld: 50 in round one, then 90, 120 and 150. Nothing may go down until your side can lay that much in one go, which is why the sheet prints the number on every line.

What is a clean pile worth, and a dirty one? A clean pile — seven of a rank with no wild cards in it — is 500. A dirty pile, with wild cards, is 300. A pile made of nothing but wild cards is 1,500 at tables that allow one.

What are red threes worth? 100 each when they are laid out with your melds, and minus 100 apiece if you are still holding them when the round ends.

What are the cards worth? Jokers 50. Twos and aces 20. Eights through kings 10. Fours through sevens and the black threes 5 each. They count for you melded and against you left in hand.

What do I have to do to go out? Finish your foot, have the piles your table agreed on — one clean and one dirty is the common minimum, two of each at many tables — and discard your last card. Going out is worth 100.

Does the highest or lowest total win? The highest, after the fourth round. The sheet is set that way and marks the leader in amber as you go.
