How it scores

The round's double is the spinner: the first three plays must come off it, which is the foot the game is named after.
When somebody goes out, everyone else counts the pips left in their hand — that is their score for the round.
The double-blank does not count nothing. It counts 50, unless your table agreed on 25 before the first shuffle.
A double-nine set gives ten rounds from the 9–9 down; a double-twelve set gives thirteen from the 12–12. Leave the top lines empty for the smaller set.
Lowest total wins — every point is a domino you were caught holding.

What is on the Chicken Foot score sheet?

The rounds are already named. Instead of thirteen lines numbered one to thirteen, each row carries the double that starts it — 12–12, 11–11, down to 0–0 — so nobody has to remember which spinner is next once the tiles are shuffled.

Type the pips as each round ends and the totals look after themselves. The lowest total is marked in amber, because in this game every point is a tile you were caught holding.

How do you score Chicken Foot dominoes?

When a player lays their last domino, everyone else adds up what is left: the two ends of each tile together. A 6–4 is ten, a 3–3 is six, a 5–0 is five.

The exception is the double-blank. It shows no pips at all and scores 50 — the heaviest single tile in the game despite looking like the lightest. Some tables play it at 25; either way, decide it before the first round rather than while somebody is stuck holding it.

How many rounds are in a game of Chicken Foot?

One round for each double in the set, played from the highest downwards. A double-nine set — the usual one for this game — gives ten rounds beginning at the 9–9. A double-twelve set gives thirteen, beginning at the 12–12.

This sheet carries all thirteen lines. With a double-nine set, simply leave the top three empty and start at the 9–9.

Why is it called Chicken Foot?

The round’s double is a spinner, and the next three tiles must all be played onto it before anything else may go anywhere. Those three branches spreading from one tile are the foot. Until the foot is complete, a player who cannot feed it draws instead — which is where most of the round’s scores come from.

The scoring is the same shape as Mexican Train, so if your evening runs to both, the two sheets work the same way and keep their games apart.

Chicken Foot scoring: questions people ask

How many rounds is a game of Chicken Foot? One for each double in the set, played from the highest down. A double-nine set gives ten rounds starting at the 9–9; a double-twelve set gives thirteen starting at the 12–12. This sheet lists thirteen — leave the top lines empty if you are playing the smaller set.

What is the double-blank worth? Fifty, not nothing. It is the one tile whose score is not its pips, which is why it is the domino nobody wants to be caught with. Some tables score it 25 instead — agree before the first shuffle, not after.

What do I write in each box? The pips left in your hand when the round ends. A 6–4 is ten, a 3–3 is six, the double-blank is fifty. Whoever went out writes a zero.

Does the highest or lowest total win? The lowest. Every point is a domino you were still holding, so the sheet marks the smallest total in amber and totals accordingly.

How is this different from Mexican Train? The scoring is the same idea, but the play is not: in Chicken Foot the round's double is a spinner that must take three tiles before anything else may be played — the shape that gives the game its name. We have a separate sheet for Mexican Train.
